Kunst ist schön,
macht aber viel Arbeit

"Art is beautiful, but requires a lot of work!"

Working in the Art World

If you imagine working in an art gallery means meeting fascinating artists, attending exhibition openings, traveling to museums and art fairs, and spending your days surrounded by extraordinary works of art — you are not wrong.

But the reality of gallery life is built just as much on logistics, organization, communication, problem-solving, and hard work behind the scenes.

A successful gallery depends on an enormous number of moving parts coming together every day: installations, shipping, inventory management, client communication, marketing campaigns, events, technology, administration, photography, design, accounting, and countless details most visitors never see.

For the right person, it can be an incredibly rewarding and dynamic environment.

Opportunities at HOHMANN

Rather than relying heavily on traditional job postings, we prefer meeting thoughtful, motivated people who are genuinely interested in the art world and building long-term relationships with individuals who may become part of future projects and opportunities.

We are always interested in hearing from people with experience in areas such as:

  • Art handling, installation, packing, and logistics
  • Museums, galleries, registrarial work, or preparator experience
  • Collector relations and hospitality
  • Marketing, campaign coordination, and social media
  • Photography, video, and content creation
  • Accounting and administration
  • CRM and database management
  • Operations and organizational support
  • Design and production software including Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere, HubSpot, and QuickBooks Online

At the same time, some of the best people in the art world come from entirely different professional backgrounds. If you believe you have exceptional organizational abilities, communication skills, technical knowledge, or simply a strong desire to grow within the gallery world, we encourage you to introduce yourself.

We are also interested in hearing from experienced museum and gallery art handlers, preparators, and installers.

A Small Team Wearing Many Hats

Working in a gallery rarely means doing just one thing.

Our team members are often involved in many different aspects of gallery operations, and we strongly value adaptability, curiosity, initiative, and teamwork. Cross-training and learning new skills are part of the culture of working in a smaller, highly active gallery environment.

Many members of our team have been with us for years. Others have gone on to careers throughout the art world after gaining hands-on experience inside the gallery.

Benefits

While the art world may not always compete with large corporate environments financially, we strive to create a positive, flexible, and supportive workplace for our team.

Depending on position and employment status, benefits may include:

  • Paid sick leave and vacation time
  • 401(k) and employer matching
  • Group health insurance contribution
  • Flexible scheduling where possible
  • Overtime and double-time compensation where applicable

Areas of Responsibility

The following categories do not represent specific open positions, but rather some of the areas that exist within gallery operations. Many responsibilities overlap across team members.

  • Registration
  • Marketing
  • Sales and collector relations
  • Sales support
  • Administration
  • Executive assistance
  • Art handling and installation
  • Preparator work
  • Press and media relations

Introduce Yourself

While we may not always be actively hiring for specific positions, we are always interested in meeting thoughtful, capable, and motivated individuals who are passionate about art, culture, and working with people.

Opportunities within the gallery can arise unexpectedly, and over the years many of our strongest professional relationships have started with a simple introduction.

Before sending a résumé, we would first like to learn a little about you.

Please tell us:

  • why you are interested in working in the art world,
  • what appeals to you about HOHMANN specifically,
  • what strengths or experience you believe you would bring to the team,
  • and what areas of gallery work you are most interested in exploring.

If we feel there may be a fit for a future opportunity, internship, freelance project, or interview, we will follow up and request additional materials including a résumé, references, and background information.
